For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. Romans 12:3 NIV
What does it mean to think highly of oneself? It means to be arrogant, conceited, egotistic, self-importance, to think we are better than someone else. So, what if we are better at doing a particular task than someone else? What if we are the director or president of a large company? Or even the head elder at church? I think it comes down to motives and actions. When we become transformed by the Holy Spirit we start looking outward instead of inward. If we are very good at a task, we will want to train others how to be good at it. If we are the leader of an organization or small group, we are there to serve others. We are there to help others up the ladder, so they achieve their potential.
How does faith fit in? When a person has not been renewed by the Holy Spirit, they seek to make themselves look good by worldly standards by wealth, position, or education. They want to look better than they really are. When there is a renewing of the mind by the Holy Spirit our faith has a different standard of measurement. Pride goes away and humility takes its place. The need for complete dependence upon God is realized. How is your faith today?
