Asking for the Holy Spirit

If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:13 NIV

In both Matthew 6 and Luke 11, Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray. Matthew 6:5-13 is the longer version. Matthew focuses on forgiveness, but Luke talks about our need to ask, seek, and knock and not give up. Luke then tells us in verse 13 what we should be asking for – the Holy Spirit. We know that Jesus says He will always be with us and that He has sent us the comforter – the Holy Spirit. I think Luke is saying we need more of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We need to ask for more. Our God wants to shower us with good gifts, but we need to ask. We need to ask each day for the outpouring of the Spirit to guide us through the day. It is through the Holy Spirit that Jesus received His commission for the day. It was through the Holy Spirit that Jesus knew the right words to say to encourage others, to teach the truths of the Father’s love. We need the same guidance each day. If you have not been asking for the Holy Spirit daily, why not start now?
