Calling All Sinners

Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:31-32 NIV)

After Jesus called Matthew, the tax collector to follow Him, Matthew gave a party in Jesus’ honor.  All the rich and connected people were invited to come meet Jesus.  However, some people complained be Matthew was a tax collector for the enemy.  Jesus told them that the healthy do not need a doctor, the sick do.  Jesus came to call the sinner to repentance not the righteous.  This is the theme throughout the whole Bible.  God is always calling the sinner to repentance and to a walk with Him.  Jesus’ whole ministry centered on showing us the love of God and calling us to repent and turn to Him.  If we think we are already okay, we will miss a great opportunity because we are all sinners and none of us is righteous.

As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; (Romans 3:10 NIV)
