On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. (Acts 1:4 NIV)
One of the first instructions Jesus gave his church was to wait. Wait for the power of the Holy Spirit. I can’t help but wonder if this directive were given to our churches today how successful we’d be at it. I think while we were waiting, maybe we’d organize an event, form a praise band, devise a new way of advertising. We don’t wait well. Is it possible somewhere along the way we’ve decided that our activity accomplishes more than the Holy Spirit can?
