Commandments of Love

The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. Romans 13:9-10 NIV

What are the thoughts behind the last six commandments of love?

  1. Bring honor and respect to your parents because they gave you life. You may not agree with their parenting style but without them you would not be here.
  2. Everyone’s life is sacred, including your own, treasure it.
  3. Honor the bond that makes two into one.
  4. Respect the property of others.
  5. May your words be truthful.
  6. Be content with what you have.

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40 NIV
