and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. Revelation 1:13-16 NKJV
Revelation 1:13-17 gives us a description of the one speaking to John. It is very similar to what Daniel describes in Daniel 10:5-12. Each item in this description of Jesus has meaning. We will look at each item and let the Bible tell us what it means.
Like son of man
(Dan 7:13 NIV) “… there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven.
(Mar 13:26 NIV) “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.
(Exo 28:4 NIV) These are the garments they are to make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a woven tunic, a turban and a sash. They are to make these sacred garments for your brother Aaron and his sons, so they may serve me as priests.
(Eze 26:16 NIV) Then all the princes of the coast will step down from their thrones and lay aside their robes and take off their embroidered garments…
(Pro 16:31 NIV) Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness.
(Isa 1:18 NIV) “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.
(Heb 4:13 NIV) Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
(Eze 1:7 NIV) Their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze.
(Eze 43:2 NIV) and I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of rushing waters, and the land was radiant with his glory.
(Dan 12:3 NIV) Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.
(Heb 4:12 NIV) For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
(Mat 17:2 NIV) There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.
This is an example of John using a few words to paint a picture. A major part of Revelation refers to events in the Old Testament. Much comes from Isaiah. The Jewish festivals, the sanctuary furniture, all play a major role in Revelation which helps us to have a better understanding.
