If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. (James 1:5-8 NIV)
Are you lacking in wisdom? James is not talking about knowledge that the world offers. Knowledge does not guarantee you will make the right decisions or come to the right conclusions affecting your spiritual life. We need heavenly wisdom to place the right value on things that compete for our time each day. We need wisdom to prioritize our life so that Christ is first. To make the right decisions for Christ in our life we need heavenly wisdom each day. James says we must ask and God will provide all we need so that we can make the right decisions. But there is another step that we must take. We must believe and have confidence that God is faithful and will provide. Faith is trusting in God and believing that He loves us and will provide the best for our good. When you have spiritual doubts then you don’t have an anchor. You will be blown around on the ocean of life and will have no spiritual stability. Without spiritual stability you will not have the wisdom to make right decisions.
