Forgiving Others

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34 NIV)

It is hard to forgive someone who has hurt us very deeply.  Sometimes it was done deliberately to hurt us and other times people hurt us not realizing they are hurting us.  If we carry the pain around without forgiving them it will eat away at us.  It becomes a burden.  Every time we think about the incident we hurt all over again.  The pain becomes deeper and deeper.  Jesus teaches us in the Lord’s Prayer to forgive others so that we may be forgiven.  We don’t have to wait for the other person to ask for forgiveness.  Jesus gave us an example when he forgave the people who crucified Him.

When the pain is so deep and it is hard to forgive we can go to the Lord and ask Him to give us a forgiving heart.  Every time the incident replays in your mind, stop and tell the Lord that you have forgiven them and to please take away the thoughts.  Over time the pain will grow less and less.  You may never forget the incident but the pain will not be there anymore.  When you forgive you do not have to put yourself back in the situation to be hurt again.

What pain of unforgiveness are you burdened with today?  Go to the Lord and He will help you release it.
