Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the LORD. Romans 12:19 NLT
This is very good advice. There are times when people do things, intentionally or unintentionally that wound us. Our first reaction is to get even. That could mean saying something nasty to them. Retaliating by gossiping about what they have done. We are passing judgment on them. Have you noticed that you really don’t get satisfaction when we retaliate against someone? The anger just sits there and smolders in us. Well, that is the way it is with me. I like Paul’s advice to turn it over to the Lord. Let Him deal with it. He is working on that person. He knows their hurts and challenges and why they did what they did. He loves them as much as he loves each one of us. None of us are perfect yet.
Consider Joseph. He was sold as a slave by his brothers. He could have held resentment and bitterness towards them. He chose to forgive them. Even before he saw his brothers in Egypt, he had decided to forgive them. God used Joseph in a might way because Joseph turned over his bitterness and anger to the Lord.
I will take revenge; I will pay them back. In due time their feet will slip. Their day of disaster will arrive, and their destiny will overtake them.’ Deuteronomy 32:35 NLT
