Helmet of Salvation

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.  (Ephesians 6:17 NIV)

Paul addresses the last two items that the soldier puts on.  In a lot of ways they are the most important.  The helmet of salvation is needed for protecting our minds.  It is where we make decisions.  It is where we made moral decisions.  It is where we make decisions to seek and follow God.  When we believe and follow the Lord, God seals us as His own.  We are part of His kingdom.

We need the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God.  This is the only part of the armor that is both defensive and offensive.  We need to know what God’s word says so we have a guideline on how to follow Him and do His will.  If we don’t know what God’s word says we will be deceived by false teachings.  We must know the genuine to recognize the false.

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12 NIV)
