“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” Mark 9:23-24 NIV
A father brings his son to the disciples asking for his son to be healed. The disciples were not able to heal the child. It was a very serious situation. Then the father sees Jesus who had just come down from an amazing experience on the Mount of Transfiguration. The father begs Jesus to help his son. Jesus identifies the problem as a lack of belief. The father acknowledges he has doubts. I think most believers have faith but there may be some doubt mixed in. How can our belief/faith get stronger? Jesus provides the answer in verse 29. Prayer and fasting. Spending time with God in prayer and Bible study. As we see Him in action in our lives and those around us, our faith gets stronger. Even when we go through difficult and trying times, our dependence on God to get us through strengthens our faith.
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1 NIV
