Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5 NIV)
What do you think of when you hear the word “meek”. Do you think of someone who is a doormat and lets people walk all over them? Do you consider a meek person to be weak, spineless and incompetent? Jesus is our example. Even in Jesus’ day the people did not think well of someone who was meek and humble. They thought only slaves were to be meek and humble. Jesus turned what others thought to be a vice into a virtue.
Have you ever thought that it requires power to be meek? Sounds like an oxymoron doesn’t it? Jesus was meek and mild. Yet he had power to calm a storm, drive out demons, heal the sick, and raise the dead. Meekness does not mean weakness. Most of all he had the strength to remain silent when people were accusing Him and crucifying Him. It takes a lot of strength to resist being resentful when someone is spiteful towards you. It takes the strength, power, and love of Jesus in you to resist being resentful. Meekness is power under control. It takes a lot of strength to be gentle under trying circumstances. We are to learn from Him. He says He is gentle and humble in heart. To be like Him means we need to be meek and humble.
