Keep Your Eyes on Jesus

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. Hebrews 12:1 NLT

How do we do it? Verse 2 gives us the answer.

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting Him, He endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now He is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. Hebrews 12:2 NLT

Focus on Jesus: The verse begins by encouraging us to “fix” or “keep our eyes” on Jesus. This implies a deliberate and continuous focus on Jesus Christ as the central figure of our faith. He is portrayed as the originator (pioneer) and completer (perfecter) of faith, emphasizing His role as the author and finisher of our salvation.

Endurance through Trials: The verse highlights Jesus’ example of endurance and perseverance. Despite the suffering and shame of the cross, Jesus endured it because of the joy set before Him—namely, the fulfillment of God’s plan of salvation and the restoration of humanity. This teaches believers to endure trials and challenges with a forward-looking perspective, knowing that God’s purposes will ultimately prevail.

Victory and Exaltation: After enduring the cross, Jesus is portrayed as having triumphed over sin and death. He sat down at the right hand of the throne of God, indicating His exaltation and authority. This underscores Jesus’ role as the victorious Savior and the fulfillment of God’s plan of redemption.

Motivation for Faith: We are encouraged to draw motivation and strength from Jesus’ example. By focusing on His faithfulness and victory, we are inspired to persevere in our own faith journey, knowing that Jesus has gone before us and paved the way.

Central Theme of Hebrews: Hebrews 12:2 encapsulates a central theme of the entire book of Hebrews—namely, the supremacy of Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promises. It reinforces the call to faithfulness, perseverance, and trust in Jesus as the anchor of our hope and salvation.

Overall, Hebrews 12:2 provides profound insights into the Christian faith, emphasizing Jesus Christ’s centrality, His sacrificial death and victorious resurrection, and the ongoing relevance of His example for believers today.
