When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him. (Luke 22:49-51 NIV)
The disciples had been with Jesus for 3 years and had heard him say things like “blessed are the meek”, “love one another” and “turn the other cheek”. But when push came to shove, the reverted back to the behavior they knew. Jesus was very clear that his kingdom wouldn’t be established with force but through love. When we are backed up against a corner, when things aren’t going our way, do we revert to a behavior that is not what Jesus lived? Probably more often than not. I hate it when that happens. The only thing we can do when it does happen is look again at the Peace Maker and keep looking at him until we are home.
