I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth! Revelation 3:15-16 NLT
Jesus used their water source as an illustration. Because the hot water had to travel six miles, it arrived in Laodicea lukewarm. The lukewarm water was dirty and didn’t have a good flavor. Have you ever drunk water that had sulfur in it? You would immediately spit it out. In growing up we lived in Deland, Florida for a short time. The water in the house had sulfur in it. I could not drink it. Putting it in the refrigerator to make it cold helped.
The church of Laodicea was like their water – lukewarm. They weren’t on fire for the Lord, nor did they completely turn their backs on Him. They were indifferent. Someone who is cold is fighting against God. Someone who is hot is fighting for God. The church of Laodicea was neither. They were distasteful to Jesus.
It is good for us to evaluate our spiritual life. Are we on fire or do we just float along?
