You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. Revelation 3:17 NLT
As with Sardis, Laodicea did not receive any praise. Pretty sad to think that Jesus had nothing good to say that the church was doing right. Is it true for us today?
The Laodicea church did not have a problem with apostasy or heresy. They had a problem with wealth. They were rich and didn’t need anything. They could take care of themselves. They didn’t need anyone or anything. In 60 A.D., an earthquake destroyed the city. Rome offered assistance to help rebuild it but Laodicea refused help. They took care of it by themselves. Wealth can give a false sense of security. The love of money has caused the church to lose its zeal for God. While Smyrna was poor in material wealth it was rich spiritually. Laodicea was rich materially but poor spiritually.
Have you ever thought that maybe we have some of the same problems as the Laodicea church?
