Look to the Rock

Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness
and who seek the Lord:
Look to the rock from which you were cut
and to the quarry from which you were hewn;
look to Abraham, your father,
and to Sarah, who gave you birth.
When I called him he was only one man,
and I blessed him and made him many.

 For I am the Lord your God,
who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
the Lord Almighty is his name.
I have put my words in your mouth
and covered you with the shadow of my hand.

Isaiah 51:1-2,15-16 (NIV)

This was God showing up to comfort his people. They were captives in Babylon and were very discouraged. He said to them “Stop looking at where you are. Instead, look back at all I have done. Look where you started and where you are now.” He goes on to tell them about his power to save them but in the middle of all that he says “I have hidden you safely in my hand.” In other words, “Sure, everything around you seems to be falling apart, but remember who I am and what I have done. Remember what I am capable of. Most importantly, remember you are safe with me.”

Father God, when we get distracted by our circumstances, help us to remember on who you are, what you’ve done and that we are safely tucked away in your hands. Amen
