Mercy and Truth

Mercy and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed. Psalms 85:10 NKJV

The whole plan of salvation is in today’s verse. It contains all of the positive attributes of God. It contains God’s covenantal love and faithfulness towards His people. It signifies God’s unwavering commitment to His promises and His steadfast loyalty to His people despite their failings.

Linked with steadfast love, faithfulness underscores God’s reliability and trustworthiness. God remains true to His word and consistently demonstrates His faithfulness throughout history.

Righteousness in the biblical context signifies God’s justice and moral integrity. It emphasizes God’s perfect standard and His commitment to upholding justice in the world.

Peace here refers not only to the absence of conflict but to a state of completeness, well-being, and harmony. It reflects the restoration of a broken relationship between humanity and God, resulting in reconciliation and wholeness.

The imagery of these attributes, “meeting” and “kissing” each other, suggests a beautiful reconciliation or union between God’s love and faithfulness on one side and His righteousness and peace on the other. It paints a picture of divine harmony and unity, where God’s justice and mercy intersect in perfect balance.

This verse also points to the redemptive work of Christ. In Jesus Christ, the perfect embodiment of God’s love, faithfulness, righteousness, and peace converge. Through His sacrificial death and resurrection, Jesus reconciles humanity to God, bringing about the ultimate expression of divine harmony and restoration.

Overall, Psalm 85:10 is a powerful affirmation of God’s character and His redemptive work in the world, reminding believers of the profound unity and completeness found in God’s nature and His saving grace.
