Ordinary?

When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. (Acts 4:13 NIV)

Ordinary? Most of us don’t want to be called ordinary. We all want to stand out, be unique, make a difference. We talk about our experience and our training. We point out our accomplishments so that we feel anything but ordinary. But God never uses people that can list their own successes. You see the problem is they aren’t God’s successes. Time and again in the Bible God calls the ordinary to do the extra ordinary. They are ordinary but faithful. Ordinary to the world but far from ordinary to God. Of course, it really goes against the grain to want to be ordinary. Our human nature fights it with everything we have. Personally, I’d rather be ordinary and called by God than noticed for something I’ve done alone. So….let the fight continue. Maybe after some time sitting with Jesus, folks will notice him and not me.
