Philadelphia – Counsel

I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take away your crown. Revelation 3:11 NLT

When their world is being shaken, Jesus says to hang in there.  Keep faithful to His word.  When life gets difficult – hang in there.  When it seems like the world is against you – hang in there.  Jesus will give you the strength that you need.  He is coming soon, and this time will seem like a drop in the bucket of time.

Jesus gives the church at Philadelphia five promises to hold on to.

Pillar in the Temple.  When a priest died, it was a Jewish custom to erect a pillar in the temple as a monument in memory of him.  When we refer to someone today as a church pillar, we are saying they are leaders.  James, Peter, and John were referred to as esteemed pillars in the church (Galatians 2:9).  Those who hold on will become pillars in God’s temple in Heaven.

Never again will they leave it.  The people would not have to leave heaven like the people did when they had to leave Philadelphia after the great earthquake in 17 A.D.  They would have a permanent home throughout eternity.

I will write on them the name of my God.  The people will have the name of God.  They will have the same character of God.  Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. (Revelation 14:1 NIV)  When a pillar was erected in the temple for a priest it would have his name and his father’s name inscribed on it giving honor also to the father of the priest.  Having the name of our Heavenly Father honors Him because of the faithfulness of His people.

Name of New Jerusalem.  The faithful will be citizens in the city of God where God dwells.

A New Name.  The church in Philadelphia understood the meaning of a new name.  Their city had been renamed several times.  The faithful will receive a special name from Jesus.

These are promises for us today as well.
