Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what He is saying to the churches. Revelation 3:13 NLT
Even though the church in Philadelphia was weak in their faith, they were given an open door of opportunity to spread the Gospel. Satan is always trying to close the door, but Jesus has the key to the door, and no one can close it. God is in control. Even if our faith is weak, all we have to do is hold onto Jesus and trust Him. No one can take your crown away. We belong to God. We have His name; we are citizens in His city. No one can take that away.
Church throughout History
The church of Philadelphia represents the church during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It was the time of the Great Awakening. There were revivals by evangelical Protestant ministers. Preachers such as Wesley, Whitefield, Edwards, Finney, and Moody were preaching, and people were giving their hearts to Jesus.
The religious revivals brought about social reforms such as anti-slavery, anti-drinking, better pay for the common laborer, etc.
Missionaries were sent to different lands. Bible societies were started. Bibles were printed in different languages and are still being translated into different languages.
The following information was taken from www.americanbible.org:
The American Bible Society was founded in 1816. In 1817 they gave Bibles to the American military. In 1842 Bibles were printed for the blind. In 1934 the first audio Bible was created. In 1987 they printed Bibles in China. In 2012 they had a digital Bible library.
- There are 1 billion people in the world today that don’t have access to God’s Word.
- There are 89 million people in the US who don’t read their Bible.
- There are 6,000 languages yet to receive a full Bible translation.
- One in seven people has experienced trauma that prevents them from encountering God in the Bible.
Over the next ten years, the American Bible Society plans to work with partners to translate 100 percent of languages around the world and equip 100 million people in the US to actively engage with the Bible.
The world still needs missionaries not only in your neighborhood but in remote areas around the world. You can join them by supporting them financially. You can also help by supporting your local food pantry, feeding the homeless, and sharing the gospel with those that have never heard it.
We can be like the church in Philadelphia by showing brotherly love to others.
