Poor in Spirit

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:3 NIV)

Our creator created in us the desire to be happy.  True happiness is found in following Christ.  Jesus in His sermon on the Mount of Beatitudes gives guidelines to true happiness.

How does being poor in spirit give happiness?  When you are poor in spirit you sense that you need the things that only Christ can offer such as peace.  When we have material wealth we sometimes get caught up in the idea that we don’t need anything.  When we feel proud, self-satisfied, self-rightous we are actually poor spiritually.

To receive heaven’s riches, we must recognize our spiritual poverty.  We can exchange our proud heart for a heart of humility.  A heart that is made of flesh and not stone.  A heart that is full of grace.

Recognizing our spiritual poverty is the ticket to receiving entrance to the kingdom of God’s grace.
