Preparing a New Home

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. John 14:1-3 NIV

I had the opportunity to visit Israel and Jordan in 2000. We were visiting friends who took us around the area. We went on a bus tour to Jordan. I noticed that there were many houses that looked like they were half-finished. The roofs were flat with rebar sticking up waiting for the next level of construction. I asked our tour guide why so many houses were unfinished. He said that when a family built a home, they left the top available for the next generation to build so the family could all live in one building.

It reminded me of our verse today. In Jesus’ day, the custom was for the groom to prepare a place at the family home for his bride. Jesus, our groom has gone to prepare a home for us at His Father’s home. He will return and take us to the home he is preparing. Just like He prepared the earth at creation for us, He is preparing a new home in heaven. He will return soon to take us home with Him.
