Setting our Focus on Christ

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:2-3 NIV

Colossians 3:2-3 encourages us to embrace our new identity in Christ, prioritize spiritual matters, and maintain an eternal perspective, reflecting our transformed life and secure relationship with God.

The exhortation to “set your minds on things above” encourages us to prioritize spiritual and eternal matters over temporal, earthly concerns. This involves aligning our thoughts, values, and priorities with those of God’s kingdom.

The statement “For you died” refers to our spiritual death to sin and the old way of life. Through faith in Christ, we have died to our former selves and are now living a new, transformed life. “Your life is now hidden with Christ in God” signifies our secure and intimate union with Christ. This hidden life suggests a profound spiritual reality that may not be fully visible to the world but is secure and protected by God.

The concept of being “hidden with Christ” conveys a sense of safety and assurance. We are kept secure in our relationship with Christ, which is a source of comfort and confidence.

This means actively directing one’s thoughts, meditations, and aspirations toward spiritual growth, godly character, and eternal purposes. It involves daily choices to prioritize prayer, scripture, worship, and acts of service over purely secular pursuits.
