Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom He gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. (Colossians 3:16 NLT)
Many of the hymns in our church hymnals come from scripture. The next time you are singing a hymn in church, look on the page, and see if it is taken from scripture. Look in the back of the hymnal for an index of the scriptures that have been put to music.
Sing to the LORD, for He has done wonderful things. Make known His praise around the world. (Isaiah 12:5 NLT)
Why should be sing scripture songs? You are repeating back to God in praises the promises He has given us. It is another way of storing His Word in our minds. Did you know God sings over us?
The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17 NIV)
I have a friend who started putting scripture to music to help her family memorize scripture. One day their young son was hurt. The mother rushed him to the ER. She heard him singing scripture songs in the back seat. He was singing to comfort himself. Singing praises to God will comfort you when you are going through a difficult time.
Even though their children are now grown, Bodil continues to write music for scripture verses. I have several of their CDs. Listening to them helps me to memorize scripture.
