Smyrna – Promise

… I will give you the crown of life. “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what He is saying to the churches. Whoever is victorious will not be harmed by the second death. Revelation 2:10-11 NLT

There are two promises. The first one is at the end of verse 10. The crown of victory would be received by those who stayed faithful.  A crown of victory was well known to the people of Smyrna because of the Olympic games held there.

Jesus said in Matthew 10:28 “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

Jesus is promising that all those that stay faithful will not experience the second death.

Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years. (Revelation 20:6 NIV)

But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars–they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8 NIV)

Church throughout History: Smyrna represents the church from 100 – 313 A.D.  The church went through severe persecution throughout the Roman Empire during the second and third centuries.  The persecution stopped when Constantine became emperor.
