Standing in the Gap

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father–Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 1 John 2:1 NIV

Can you hear the love in John’s words as a father speaking to a child? The purpose of John’s letter is to help believers develop a strong relationship with Jesus (read the first chapter of 1 John). John is encouraging so that if we sin, we can go to Jesus and ask for forgiveness. Jesus is our mediator, intercessor, and advocate. He stands in the gap for us. We are covered with His righteousness.
