Steps to Praying – Part 1

Rejoice always,

pray continually,

give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV

Many people do not feel comfortable praying. Perhaps they don’t know how to pray. Prayer is like communicating with a friend. God always hears our prayers. Sometimes, it feels like our prayers go no further than the ceiling. Perhaps something is blocking your prayers. Ask God to show you what is in the way. There may be some secret sin that is getting in the way.

There are many examples of how to pray in the Bible. Jesus taught His disciples an outline for prayer. We find it in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4. There is a prayer of Daniel in chapter 9. The Psalms are prayers that David wrote out. There are so many examples in the Bible of prayer. Do a Google search on prayers in the Bible to find others.

In our verses today, there is an outline for prayer.

  1. Praise God,
  2. lift up your petitions,
  3. give thanks for what God is doing and will do.

This simple outline is in most of the prayers in the Bible. You can also pray a prayer of thanksgiving or rejoicing and praising God. This will draw you closer to God.
