Taming the Tongue

Psalms 19:14

but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. (James 3:8-10 NIV)

How can just a little part of the body be both sweet and evil?  The whole chapter of James 3 is talking about words.  Our words can do so much good.  We can encourage people. We can comfort people.  We can promote healing and bring emotional and mental wellness to people with our words.  Oh what damage our words can also bring.  We can cause people to be discouraged.  We can make people feel worthless.  We can destroy relationships for life with just a few words.

Lord Jesus, please control my tongue because I can’t.  May my words always be encouraging and up lifting.  May they always be Christ-like.  Lord, I know I can’t do this by myself.  I can only do it through you.  May my words and actions shine like the sun because I have the SON living in me.  Thank you Lord.  Amen.
