The American Dream

The American Dream

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. Romans 12:1, 2 MSG

The part of this text that says don’t become so well adjusted to your culture that you fit in….that is hard to do. We want to fit in. We want the American Dream. The problem is that much of the time the American Dream takes all the energy we have. We are so exhausted from chasing it that we don’t have time to even glance at God’s dream for us. And when you look at some of the things that happen in our “dream”, sometimes it seems more like a nightmare. I have to ask myself “Is this what I was created for?” I don’t think so.  I think we were all created for more. I want to embrace the “more” part of it. I am tired of the killing, insulting, way too much talking no action world we live in. Our lives should be an offering to God….not to ourselves. The only way to get past what at times seems impossible is to get to know God. Spend time with him and embrace his dream for us. This is what we are created for.
