What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight… (James 4:1-2 NIV)
This is a terrible picture that James is painting. How many times have you seen problems where people are so upset with each other that they verbally assault each other? How do we get to a place where we act like this in the work place, at home, or in the church? James says it is coming from within us because are desires are not in line with God’s will. We want things but just can’t seem to achieve them. We want that promotion but are passed over. No matter how hard we work we just can’t achieve what we want and feel bitter and/or defeated. We argue and get angry at the drop of a hat. When we see that things are not going the way we expected them to, maybe we need to stop and think, are our desires in line with God’s will? I once was very upset over not getting a particular position where I worked. I was insulted over what they gave me but it was something I liked to do and took the new position anyway. It was several years later that I realized the job I took was actually preparing me for work that God had for me a few years later.
