The Good Shepherd

Yes, the Sovereign LORD is coming in power. He will rule with a powerful arm. See, He brings His reward with Him as He comes. He will feed His flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in His arms, holding them close to His heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young. (Isaiah 40:10-11 NLT)

Isaiah 40 talks about the coming of the Messiah.  When I first read this text the dichotomy of Jesus coming in power and then holding the lambs close to his heart struck me. How opposite is that? How can you come in power and rule with a powerful arm and then turn around and lead like a shepherd carrying lambs in your arm. But that is exactly what he did. He used his power to transform himself into a helpless babe. And then, all throughout his ministry he gently led folks with love and acceptance. He chose not to use his power while here on earth but connected regularly with the power from above. While we know that God is all powerful in the ultimate sense of the word, Jesus showed us the power of the love that is behind the mighty arm. There was power all throughout his birth, his life, his death and resurrection but it was motivated by the greatest power of all, love.  There is nothing more powerful than that.
