The Right Kind of Fasting

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter– when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. (Isaiah 58:6-8 NIV)

What kind of fasting does God require of us?  Fasting from food, TV, electronics, etc. is good when we devote that time to spending it with God.  This is good.  But even better is to help others.  Help feed and clothe those that are going hungry such as the homeless or those that have lost their jobs and can’t provide for their family.  When we change from being self-centered to God-centered we will find rest for our souls.  Isaiah says if we show God’s love to others our relationship with Him will grow stronger.  Why not read the whole chapter of Isaiah 58 today and see the promises God has for you?
