But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 1 John 1:7 NIV
God is light (1 Joh 1:5). What does that mean? When God created this earth, the first element was light. The sun had not been set in the sky yet. Where did the light come from? His presence emits a light that is brighter than day. His light dispels darkness. The darkness of sin cannot exist in His presence.
In verse 7, John says we are to walk in God’s light. His light is His character – love, truth, etc. If we walk in His light we reflect His light. As we reflect His light, we share it with one another.
Since God’s light cannot be in the presence of sin, Jesus purifies us from all sin so that we can be with the everlasting light of God.
For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light. Ephesians 5:8 NIV
The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day. Proverbs 4:18 NIV
