We Are Children of God

So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. (1 Peter 1:14-15 NLT)

Children of God are children of obedience.  We strive to be like our Father in Heaven but we fail miserably.  We can’t do it on our own.  That is what is called salvation by works.  We can never be good enough.  That is why Jesus came to earth so that we can be covered with His righteousness.  Does that mean we should ignore God’s law?  God forbid as Paul says.  God’s law is a guide for righteous living.  The first four commandments (Exodus 20:2-11) tell us how God wants us to honor Him and worship Him.  The last six (Exodus 20:12-17) tell us how to love others.  God’s law is holy just as He is holy.  God’s law is love just as He is love.

What if we mess up and don’t treat others or God with love and respect?  1 John 1:9 says we can come to the Lord and confess our sin and He will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  No sin is too great for God not to forgive.  Now that is the love of God in action.  That is grace!
