What If?

She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.  Luke 2:7 (NLT)

Can you imagine being the inn keeper and turning away a pregnant woman because there was no room? Not just any pregnant woman mind you, but the mother of Jesus.  I think we often look at that and say “What if.” What if he didn’t turn her away? What if instead they found lodging in a magnificent palace? And I wonder if Mary as she was settling down to give birth next to some animals, I wonder if she was asking God “Is this how you want your Son to be born?” Did she get angry and frustrated? While we can never be sure of why God is doing what he’s doing, we do know he always has a plan. And his plan was for Jesus to be born in the lowest of places. A place that everyone, no matter what their social standing, could identify with.  A plan that said “No matter who you are, where you live or what you have or do not have, this gift is for you.”
