What is true fasting?

  1. ‘We have fasted before You!’ they say. ‘Why aren’t You impressed? We have been very hard on ourselves, and You don’t even notice it!’ “I will tell you why!” I respond. “It’s because you are fasting to please yourselves. Even while you fast, you keep oppressing your workers.
  2. What good is fasting when you keep on fighting and quarreling? This kind of fasting will never get you anywhere with Me.
  3. You humble yourselves by going through the motions of penance, bowing your heads like reeds bending in the wind. You dress in burlap and cover yourselves with ashes. Is this what you call fasting? Do you really think this will please the LORD?
  4. “No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people .Isaiah 58:3-6 NLT

It is interesting that this verse comes today as I have been thinking of going on a fast to improve my health. People fast for different reasons. Some for a change in diet, some for religious traditions at set times throughout the year. There are many different types of fasts. Do a Google search and see how many there are. Fasting can be good for both physical and spiritual health.

The fasting that God wants us to do is a fast that changes the heart. He is more interested in the inside, not the outside. The fast He is recommending is one that has compassion for those that are hurting. To treat others with love. A fast that makes a difference to the way we think and act and brings glory to God.
