What should we pray for?

“And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. “You fathers—if your children ask [for bread, do you give them a stone? Or if they ask] for a fish, do you give them a snake instead? Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.” (Luke 11:9-13 NLT)

Do you sometimes have a long laundry list of things to present to the Lord in prayer? Jesus said to ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened. Jesus then talks about how we give good gifts to our children. Won’t our Heavenly father give us good gifts also? Then Jesus says in verse 13 what we should be asking for. The Holy Spirit! It is not our long laundry list of requests but to ask for the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will guide us in our prayer life.  The Holy Spirit will help us know how to pray for others and what we should pray for ourselves that we will become closer to the Lord and our hearts be in tune with His. Let us ask for the Holy Spirit daily. Just as the manna fell once a day in the early morning, let’s ask for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit each morning. That is what Jesus did every morning – He spent time in prayer with His Heavenly Father.
