What’s Your New Year Prayer?

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 (NLT)

I don’t do New Year’s resolutions. Mostly, my thinking goes along the lines of “If I want to do something, I’ll do it and I don’t need a new year to make it happen.” And “Chances are I wouldn’t stick to it anyway or I’d have already done it.” But last year, I did a New Year’s prayer. My prayer was that I would find joy in God. I was feeling underwhelmed by the checklist we put ourselves through. You know, go to church – check; read my Bible – check; pray – check, check, check. The Bible says that God is supposed to fill us with joy and in the busyness of being a Christian, I was missing the joy. Hence, the prayer. As goes the way of most New Year’s resolutions I prayed it and forgot about it. Over this year God has remembered my prayer. Even though there were some really difficult circumstances, I remember experiencing joy throughout. I remember realizing that it was my friendship with God that was bringing me joy, not my circumstances. Yesterday, I felt impressed to write today about joy. “Strange”, I thought. But when I sat down this morning to search for texts on joy, I found Romans 15:13 and I remembered my prayer last year. I realized that God didn’t forget my prayer. Instead he answered it. He did teach me to find joy in him and not in my circumstances.  I have to chuckle that I didn’t even remember that I prayed this New Year’s prayer until God brought it back up. I guess he wanted me to know that he is listening and he doesn’t forget. What will your New Year’s prayer be this year? I’m definitely doing one.
