Why should we keep God’s Commandments?

If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. John 15:10 NIV

Do we have to keep God’s commandments (Exodus 20:1-17) to be saved? Have you ever gone a whole day without breaking one of the commandments? I know I haven’t. Our salvation is not based on keeping the commandments. That does not mean that the commandments of God are not important. God said He will write His law on our hearts. When His law is in our hearts, that means that we want to keep them. Yes, we will break them. That is when 1 John 1:9 comes in. We can ask for forgiveness, and God will forgive us and cleanse us. We choose to keep God’s commandments out of our love for Him. Jesus died to take our penalty for sin (breaking the commandments of God). Jesus didn’t make the commandments void; He made the penalty void if we choose to follow Him.

“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. Jeremiah 31:33 NIV

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 NIV

We all desire the wages of sin. Choose the gift of eternal life instead.
