He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. Deuteronomy 8:3 NIV
Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3 when Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness to turn stones into bread. Jesus had the power to transform the stones into bread so that He could have food after being forty days without food. He overcame the lust of appetite. This is the same temptation that Satan presented to Eve. If it looks good, it must be good. That small little bite had big consequences. Satan is still using appetite to temp us, overindulgence, wanting things we don’t have and often don’t need, and addictions to food, drugs, alcohol, etc. How did Jesus overcome the temptation of appetite? He quoted the scriptures. The scriptures give us the wisdom to overcome whatever Satan presents to us. However, we need to know the scriptures and the Word of God to receive the benefits of overcoming like Jesus did.
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.'” Luke 4:4 NIV
