Work Where You Are

So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah. 1 Samuel 16:13 (NLT)

After Samuel anointed David, next King of Israel, David went back to his day job, attending sheep. This is the equivalent of being told you were going to be the President of the United States but for now you should return to your day job, whatever that is for each of us. Even though God’s call on David’s life was to eventually do great things, until it was time David was expected to do what God had already put before him. First, he was a shepherd. Then he was a harpist and after that an armor bearer. What was God expecting? God was expecting that David would do whatever God called him to do when God called him to do it. Some of David’s duties were not glamorous but God had a plan just as he has a plan for all of us. Part of that plan is to do our very best with what he places before us each day. There is a lot to learn while we are getting where God wants us to be. We shouldn’t waste a minute…. even if what we are doing is attending sheep.

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might… (Ecclesiastes 9:10a NIV)
