What does it mean to live by the flesh?

For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. Romans 8:13 NIV

There are many verses in which Paul talks about living by the flesh. What does it mean? I looked up today’s verse in several translations to come up with a different meaning, one that I could understand better. Most said “flesh.” However, reading the New Living Translation, the verse prior says sinful nature. I also found that Today’s International Verse, Good News Bible, and International Standard Version say “human nature.”

So, what does flesh mean in today’s verse?

In Romans 8:13, “flesh” refers to the sinful nature or the earthly desires within a person. The verse reads: “For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.” Here, “flesh” represents the tendencies or inclinations towards sinful behavior, which can lead to spiritual death if not overcome by living in accordance with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It emphasizes the struggle between worldly desires and spiritual growth.

Another way that I understand “flesh” to mean is worldly desires. Living according to the world. Desiring worldly things. Where does desiring worldly things get us? It does not lead to eternal life but to eternal death. Walking with the Spirit will lead us to eternal life. Choose you today whom you will serve, flesh/world or Heavenly things. Keeping our focus on Jesus and not the world will bring us peace and eternal life.
